Nomad Pioneers
Nomad Pioneers is a travel club for independent people who enjoy spending longer in a place and getting to know others along the way. This season, we're coming together in Cuenca to work, share dinners, and explore — with time for our own routines and space.
Membership includes access to the community, the Nomad Pioneers app, and community-organized events.
A travel club by Habytor LLC · led by Matthias Zeitler
Your membership connects you with other Nomad Pioneers and gives you access to the club's app and community-organized events. Members bring people together for dinners, coworking meetups, conversations, and shared discoveries.
You choose where to stay and which activities to join. Tours, professional guides, transport, and other paid local experiences are provided by local businesses and charged separately. Any additional costs are explained before you commit.
Access to the member community, use of the Nomad Pioneers app, and community-organized events during your membership period.
Fellow members and community hosts bring people together — dinners, meetups, walks, and plans. You join what appeals to you.
Accommodation, meals, transport, coworking, and paid local activities from local providers. Extra costs are shared before you commit.
You've done the solo nomad thing.
What if you arrived in a city with a community already waiting to meet you?
“New city. Nobody knows your name. Two weeks just to find a café with decent WiFi.”
You arrive alongside other remote professionals already exploring the city. Introductions, coworking sessions, and shared plans make it easier to find familiar faces.
“You finally meet someone interesting — and they leave the next day. Your coworking space is fine, but nobody talks to each other.”
The group collectively maps the city — sharing discoveries, favorite spots, and routines. Months of solo research compressed into your first week.
“Another month goes by. Great photos. Few real friendships. You're productive — but alone.”
Spending a season alongside other members changes the texture of the day. Ideas over breakfast. A second opinion during coworking. Friends at dinner.
At cafés. At coworking spaces. On evening walks along the river.
The mix is what makes the community interesting.

Over a decade of building nomad ecosystems — from transforming Bansko into Europe's top digital nomad hub to pioneering community-owned coliving. Now bringing the same playbook to the Andes.
A UNESCO World Heritage city of 600,000 in the Ecuadorian Andes. Walkable, affordable, and surrounded by nature — yet completely off the standard nomad circuit.
Most nomads pass through Quito or Medellín.
Cuenca has the infrastructure, walkability, and culture — but almost no nomad community yet.
This group becomes the first cohort exploring what life here could look like.

Universities, markets, daily life that continues regardless of visitors. A real city, not a resort.
Mild climate at 2,500m elevation. Warm days, cool nights — no air conditioning needed, a light layer for evenings.
Safe, walkable colonial streets, rivers through the center, cafés everywhere. Daily life without a car.
Cajas National Park, mountain hikes, hot springs, and waterfalls all nearby. Inca ruins at Ingapirca make a great day trip.
One of Latin America’s most established expat communities. Healthcare, rentals, and international restaurants already in place.
Rent from $400/month. Lunch for $3. Coffee for $2. A coworking desk for $100. Ecuador uses USD — no conversion needed on the ground.
No itinerary. No pressure. Just a city that makes it easy to have a good day.

Coffee at a corner café. Laptop open, sun coming through the window. Someone from the group sits down next to you.
Deep work at a coworking space or your apartment. The city is quiet. Your calendar is clear until the afternoon.
$3 almuerzo at a local comedor — soup, rice, meat, juice. You go with two people you met three days ago.
A walk along the Tomebamba river. The light turns golden. You pass colonial churches and flower markets.
Community dinner at a restaurant someone discovered last week. Twelve people, four nationalities, one long table.
Rooftop drinks overlooking the cathedral domes. Travel stories, business ideas, and plans for the weekend trip.
Shared dinners stretch into the evening.
Travel stories and new ideas flow freely.
Plans for the weekend's trail naturally take shape.
With a close-knit community by your side, you'll always have a familiar face nearby when the sun sets.
Long dinners with new friends at restaurants you'd never find alone
Rooftop drinks overlooking cathedral domes and mountain silhouettes
Stories and travel experiences shared late into the night
Planning weekend trips together over a second bottle of wine
Running into community members everywhere you go in the city
The kind of friendships that outlast the season by years

This is a three-month season for location-independent people who want more than just another tourist destination. You might recognize yourself in one of these groups:
Entrepreneurs and remote workers who need reliable infrastructure, deep work sessions, and a community that gets things done.
Hikers, adventurers, and culture-seekers eager to discover Andean trails, vibrant local festivals, and weekend expeditions.
Connectors looking for long-term friendships, collaborative projects, and late-night conversations over wine or coffee.
We treat the city as our playground. Together, we'll map the infrastructure, explore the daily lifestyle, and uncover the hidden gems that make a destination truly livable. We're not just visiting Cuenca—we're exploring its potential as the world's next nomad destination.
Vet the best cafés, workspaces, and neighborhoods for remote work.
Explore local culture, Andean hikes, and weekend expeditions.
Build lasting ties with a curated group of founders and creators.
We provide the structure and the community.
You help write the playbook for Cuenca.
Work happens during the day.
Community gatherings tend to land in the late afternoon and evening, with the odd daytime meetup.
P.S. Events are scheduled around work hours. Mornings and early afternoons are yours — for deep work, client calls, or just finding your favorite café. This is a community for people who get things done.
There's no fixed weekly calendar. Members bring people together for things like these — some organized ahead, many arranged on the spot. You join what appeals to you.
Participants present what they've been building — startups, tools, or experiments. Local founders and university guests are invited so it becomes a real event.
Cuenca is surrounded by incredible landscapes — national parks, mountain lakes, hot springs, indigenous markets, and small villages. Many visitors explore these places individually. Going together with a large group turns it into a shared experience.
A curated evening to experience the city's culture together, like a traditional Ecuadorian dinner with live music, a salsa night, or a historic venue gathering.
A closing-style gathering where members share projects, art, photography, or writing. It's about showing what the community has been creating and experiencing together.
Not everything is organized by us. Cuenca already has a vibrant cultural life — and you're free to explore on your own.
The program adds a community layer.
But the most interesting moments often come from members organizing things themselves — dinners, coworking days, hikes, project collaborations, or spontaneous meetups.
Choose your spending level for each category to build a realistic monthly estimate for life in Cuenca.
Prices may shift by the time you arrive. These are estimates — your actual costs will depend on your lifestyle.

The program overlaps with some of Cuenca's most interesting moments. Participants experience both local traditions and everyday life in the city.
Christmas celebrations and the Pase del Niño Viajero — one of Ecuador's most spectacular religious processions, with elaborate floats and costumes.
Street parties, burning of the año viejo effigies, and local traditions you won't find anywhere else. A New Year's like no other.
Three Kings celebrations in early January. Local festivities, parades, and a deeper look at Ecuadorian traditions.
Carnaval festivities fill the streets with music, water fights, and community energy. One of the liveliest weeks of the year.
Accommodation isn't included, but you won't be searching alone. We share curated listings and connect you with other members looking for flatmates.
Many members choose apartments near each other, which naturally turns cafés, gyms, and coworking spaces into everyday meeting points.

We vet every recommendation for reliable wifi, quality, and a welcoming vibe. Many offer small discounts for our group — but more importantly, these are the spots where you'll bump into fellow Pioneers over coffee, lunch, or an evening workout.
Two resources built specifically for this program: a city exploration app powered by the community, and a comprehensive field guide you can read offline. Both are starting points — during the program, we'll verify everything on the ground and add our own experiences.

42+ curated experiences — hikes, day trips, cooking classes, cultural visits. See what others are planning, track your progress, and coordinate weekend trips.
Included with membership · Any device

A practical field manual — 8 chapters, 32 topics, cost tables, venue picks, and neighborhood maps. Currently a draft based on research; we'll verify and expand it on the ground with first-hand experiences. Read it on the plane, at a café, or offline.
Available as a downloadable PDF.

Over the past decade, Matthias Zeitler has built ecosystems that transform unexpected locations into thriving hubs for location-independent workers. After doing annual nomad popup events and transforming the quiet ski town of Bansko into one of Europe's most recognized destinations and pioneering a massive community owned rural coliving project in Semkovo, his focus remains on intentional, long-term community building.
Now, with Nomad Pioneers - Cuenca, Matthias is bringing this experience building nomad communities to the Andes. The goal is to bring together an international group and explore whether Cuenca has the right ingredients to become a great destination for remote workers and entrepreneurs.
Six-week winter pop-ups across the Mediterranean. We transformed 5-star resorts into vibrant living and working hubs, bringing founders and freelancers together.
The catalyst that transformed a quiet Bulgarian ski town into Europe’s premier digital nomad hub. Today, it attracts thousands of location-independent workers year-round.
An annual gathering of 700+ remote workers for talks, collaboration, and mountain adventures. This flagship event cemented Bansko's reputation and sparked a global movement.
Transforming a massive 17,000m² abandoned socialist building into the world's largest rural coliving space. Fully community-owned, offering over 200 apartments deep in the mountains.

Our community hosts are fellow club members who enjoy bringing people together. They help make introductions, suggest plans, and organize gatherings for other members. Everyone is welcome to contribute an idea or bring a few people together.

Start with one month within the Cuenca season. Access covers one month from your arrival; the season ends March 15, so arriving later doesn't extend it.
Upgrade to Full-Season Membership later for an additional $500. With the $399 early-bird One-Month Membership, your total after upgrading is $899. Joining for the full season upfront is better value.
