15 Affordable Places to Live Abroad for One to Three Months

Plan the whole working month, not just the rent: 15 private-home budgets with the contract details that change the total.

Direct answer

For a private apartment and a working month below €1,500, start with Da Nang; also price Yogyakarta and Siem Reap, where the lower housing offers need a fresh quote. With €1,500–2,000, compare Kuala Lumpur, Cuenca, Chiang Mai and Bansko for more room in the budget. Puebla is another option if its €1,430–2,050 full-workmonth scenario fits your quote. Choose Buenos Aires, Oaxaca or Penang for a particular city experience, not an automatic saving. Keep flights, insurance and arrival costs outside these monthly living figures.

Affordability for a one-to-three-month stay depends on the home you can rent for that period. A year-long lease headline, a hotel room without a kitchen and a shared apartment do not buy the same daily life. Choose two or three cities from the table, then replace the housing allowance with a written quote for your dates.

Budget for a home, a desk and an ordinary month

These budgets assume one adult occupying a whole furnished studio or compact apartment, with a private bathroom, usable kitchen, internet and normal utility use. Nobody is splitting the rent. A month means about 30 nights and 20 working days.

Food covers groceries and roughly 20 modest meals out. Transport allows for walking, public transport and occasional short rides. The final allowance covers mobile data, laundry, toiletries and modest social activities. Food, transport and personal spending are editorial allowances you can adjust; they are not measured city averages.

Desk costs use monthly shared-workspace plans or a full working month's access. Hour-limited offers need special care: 40 hours is one busy week, not a month. For home-based work, check the apartment's chair, work surface and call privacy before removing the desk cost.

The ranges describe two spending scenarios, not the cheapest and most expensive life in each city. Housing and workspace anchors were checked on 23 September 2026. Some advertised homes require refreshed prices, and the Penang and Oaxaca examples need replacement availability; their profiles explain the next step.

For Cuenca, the lower scenario is €550 + €280 + €70 + €30 + €130 = €1,060. The upper is €850 + €400 + €140 + €70 + €220 = €1,680. Apply the same addition to your own apartment, desk and daily-spending choices. You need all five costs to fit together, not just a tempting rent.

Conversions use 22 September 2026 reference rates: €1 = US$1.1463, THB37.988, MYR4.6700, IDR20,426.66, MXN19.7727 and £0.85780 from the ECB. Peru's SBS accounting rates supply PEN3.842370 per euro and cross-rates of about GEL2.958 and VND30,019. Card, cash and transfer rates will differ; refresh the conversion and keep a buffer before paying.

Fifteen places to price for your dates

1. Da Nang: the first check for a lower-cost apartment-and-desk plan

Start here if keeping the recurring total below €1,500 is the main constraint. Enosta Space advertises monthly apartments from VND8.5 million and desks from VND2.3 million. The €350–600 housing allowance leaves room above the advertised apartment floor for bills and the selected unit.

Choose through the actual apartment, not the starting price. The operator describes kitchen-equipped homes, but confirm that the quoted unit has the cooking facilities and work conditions you need. Ask for electricity and water rates, AC costs, internet, cleaning and desk hours in one 30-, 60- or 90-night quote. This is the most useful first comparison because housing and work can be priced through the same operator.

2. Yogyakarta: a low-budget candidate if the apartment and work setup fit

Investigate Yogyakarta if you can spend time checking a modest studio and café-based work routine. A Travelio-posted Student Park offer advertises monthly furnished studios with kitchens; the March 2025 price needs a fresh quote. Travelio's monthly terms also separate electricity, water and linen from rent.

The desk allowance uses Antologi's work-from-café offer rather than a guaranteed quiet office. Choose another setup if you spend most days on calls; phone booths cost extra. Get the full apartment invoice and check the journey from Seturan to your chosen workspace. A lower housing bill is useful only if the neighborhood and workday suit you.

3. Siem Reap: a modest base with a daytime workspace

Shortlist Siem Reap if a simple apartment and daytime desk meet your needs. Footprint Cafés publishes a US$65 monthly workspace offer, with normal hours ending in the early evening. It suits a daytime schedule better than one requiring late-night office access.

Refresh the housing price before relying on the €920 lower total. LY Residence Suite describes kitchen-equipped monthly homes, but its website retains old promotional material. Request a current rent, utility breakdown and minimum term. Keep major temple visits and tours outside the routine social allowance; several excursion-heavy weekends can change an otherwise modest monthly budget.

4. Chiang Mai: compare the travel month as carefully as the room

Choose Chiang Mai if you want to build a repeatable home-and-coworking routine, and can secure a date-specific apartment quote. The Kannas lists a kitchen-equipped one-bedroom at THB20,000 with bills, Wi-Fi and weekly housekeeping, but its monthly offer has seasonal restrictions. Ask which rate applies to your exact stay.

Use around €160–200 for a full one-month desk plan; Yellow's current linked tariff lists THB5,990 for a month. Longer commitments differ. Before choosing a cheaper hot-season stay, check current air conditions and flexible cancellation terms: northern Thailand can have serious smoke episodes. The winter-destination guide helps compare timing with other bases.

5. Kuala Lumpur: start with a kitchen-equipped studio

Kuala Lumpur is a useful next check if a managed studio appeals more than searching individual landlords. NOVO Suites advertises its 343-square-foot studio with a private kitchen/living area from RM2,500 per month. Wi-Fi is included; electricity and water are separate. The €600–850 housing scenario allows for those bills and the selected dates.

The main tradeoff is the final unit and location, not the city label. Confirm the AC meter rate, cleaning, washer access and deposit. Price the chosen Common Ground branch rather than assuming every location has the network's lowest advertised rate. Then map the home-to-desk journey before committing.

6. Cuenca: a strong private-home option for a longer routine

Put Cuenca on the shortlist if a furnished home and an ordinary neighborhood routine are the priority. YapaTree's short-stay portfolio covers visitor apartments and one-to-six-month stays, with studio and one-bedroom asking-price anchors that fit inside the housing scenario. Request the selected unit's quote and included bills.

The lower desk allowance uses CoWorking Cuenca's weekday plan. Other spaces can cost more: La Ofi's cheaper plans are hour-limited, so price unlimited access if you need it. Use the Cuenca cost-of-living guide to plan local spending and the neighborhood guide to compare daily routes. For a hosted social starting point, Nomad Pioneers offers a seasonal community; its fee is separate from this independent-living budget.

7. Puebla: inspect the full-month work arrangement

Puebla is worth pricing if you want a private Mexican apartment without assuming Oaxaca's visitor rents. R&T Administración lists a furnished loft near Medicina BUAP for one-month stays, with a kitchen, utilities, internet and weekly cleaning. Its undated tariff needs reconfirmation, but the stated term matches a temporary stay.

Budget €430–500 for 20 workdays at Think Lab's Zona FLEX: 20 × MXN420 = MXN8,400, about €425 at the stated rate. This brings Puebla's recurring total to €1,430–2,050. Confirm tax and full-day reservations before paying. The separate MXN150 day-pass headline may be cheaper; request matching access terms before lowering the budget. Its Sanctorum location is outside Centro, so check the journey from the BUAP-area loft or price a desk nearer home.

8. Bansko: affordable routine, with heating and outdoor costs separate

Choose Bansko if a smaller base and an independent monthly apartment suit you. Novi Apartments lists kitchen-equipped homes with monthly terms. The €550–850 housing allowance includes room above the base rents for utilities, but winter heating still needs an explicit quote.

A Nestwork hot desk is advertised at €158 per month. That makes a real monthly plan easier to compare than a visit bundle. Confirm the final clean, utility charges and seasonal rent before paying. Ski passes, equipment and frequent mountain outings are outside the ordinary-living total. For 90 days, also compare genuine three-month apartment contracts; skip a four-month winter offer if you will leave after three.

9. Arequipa: make the desk commitment match the stay

Consider Arequipa if you can give a modest whole-home option a careful check. A seller's furnished-apartment advert offers stays from one day to a full month with a kitchen, but its undated tariff needs confirmation. Verify exclusive occupancy, internet, bills and the current price before using the housing allowance.

The wide desk range matters. Prime requires three months for its monthly plan; 20 one-day passes cost much more. Use the high desk scenario for a one-month trial unless you obtain a better matching offer. Choosing the apartment and workspace together will also prevent an unexpected commute from absorbing the saving.

10. Tbilisi: price the small apartment you will use

Tbilisi suits a traveler who wants their own furnished base and is willing to compare units within a host's portfolio. Citizen Tbilisi offers monthly homes at different sizes and prices. The €600–950 housing allowance targets a smaller home; the larger apartments do not all fit it.

Ask about the selected home's kitchen, heating or AC, utility caps and payment currency. Terminal Roses Garden publishes a GEL500 monthly dedicated desk, which anchors the work allowance. Test that particular home-to-desk route rather than borrowing the cheapest apartment and a distant workspace for one budget. A written total in the payment currency is more useful than a converted portfolio headline.

11. Buenos Aires: keep the service fee and neighborhood together

Choose Buenos Aires for the city experience with enough budget headroom, not because every month will land at the low end. Alternativa Rent lists kitchen-equipped furnished homes on one-to-twelve-month contracts, including bills in its advertised terms. It also charges a service fee that you need in the quote.

Use €1,800–2,200 as a more comfortable planning position if restaurants and a preferred workspace matter. Lower desk examples come from People Coworking in Caballito; they are not automatically near a Palermo apartment. Lock the rent currency, service charge and cancellation terms, then compare the location as one daily routine.

12. Plovdiv: a furnished short stay costs more than an ordinary lease headline

Choose Plovdiv if you like the city enough to pay for a convenient short contract. A specific furnished one-bedroom is advertised at €900 per month with bills and short-stay terms. It provides a useful whole-home anchor, but does not make Plovdiv a guaranteed sub-€1,500 stay.

The apartment is near the Rowing Base/Pulmed area, so map the commute to your workspace. Cat and Mouse lists a €96 open workspace and a €162 fixed workspace, both including VAT, with different access hours. Choose the access you need and obtain the apartment's dated total. Do not replace it with a cheaper year-long lease rate in your spreadsheet.

13. Oaxaca: choose the experience, then secure the apartment

Oaxaca belongs on a culturally motivated shortlist with a housing budget that can stretch. The €950–1,250 allowance uses the scale of a one-month kitchen-equipped offer, but that particular apartment is occupied. Get an available replacement quote before treating this as an affordable option for your dates.

Check festival and holiday periods separately. A hotel room without cooking facilities also changes the food budget. Céntrico publishes a monthly desk with 24-hour access; request the tax-inclusive amount. If the replacement home pushes the total beyond your ceiling, compare Puebla rather than making the Oaxaca numbers fit by dropping necessary costs.

14. Penang: confirm a matching home before counting on the budget

Penang is a conditional choice here, best pursued because you want Penang rather than the lowest total. A direct owner's monthly apartment rate anchors the €1,100–1,450 housing scenario, but the home is booked through April 2028. You need a different available whole-apartment quote.

Require a usable kitchen, internet, bills and permission for your exact stay length. Ordinary lease adverts do not settle a one-month visitor price. Common Ground lists Georgetown within its hot-desk network, but confirm the branch total and daytime access. If the home quote breaks your budget, start with Kuala Lumpur's clearer monthly-studio offer instead of assuming Penang must be cheaper.

15. Tirana: plan above €1,800, and check the season

Tirana is a higher-budget comparison in this list. The kitchen-equipped SOLEiL offer gives October–May rates of €1,200 for one month or €1,100 per month for two to three months. The lower table total uses the longer term; a one-month stay starts around €1,920 under the same spending assumptions.

Refresh those seasonal terms and ask which utilities are included. Innospace lists a €170 monthly desk. Request a separate summer quote rather than extending the winter rate yourself. Choose Tirana if the destination and setup justify the price; use another city if €1,500 is a firm ceiling.

Separate monthly spending from money needed on arrival

Keep three amounts in your plan: recurring living costs, non-refundable trip costs and refundable cash tied up in deposits. A deposit can be returned, but you still need the money available while abroad. Several operators require advance rent as well.

Ask for flights, entry charges, insurance, booking or agency fees and final cleaning before comparing stays. Add bank-transfer and currency-conversion costs if the host requires a particular payment method. Keep continuing expenses at home in a separate line rather than letting them disappear from the decision.

Divide non-refundable one-off costs by the number of months to see the effective monthly cost. An €80 final clean adds €80 to a one-month stay or roughly €27 per month over three months. It is a simple reason a longer stay can work out better without assuming a rent discount.

Retain an emergency reserve beyond the table. A 10–15% planning buffer is a useful starting rule for normal variation; it does not replace insurance or enough money for an unexpected flight. Reduce the housing target or shorten the stay when the plan requires every low endpoint to work.

Choose 30, 60 or 90 days through the contract

For 30 days, prioritize an explicit one-month home and desk. A slightly higher monthly rent may be worthwhile if utilities, cleaning and a manageable deposit are clear. Avoid annual lease adverts and three-month desk commitments.

For 60 days, ask for a two-month quote rather than assuming a standard discount. Compare the whole amount, including cleaning and deposits. The sampled Tirana offer reduces the monthly rent after the first month, but that is one operator's seasonal term, not a universal rule.

For 90 days, compare genuine three-month offers such as Bamro's Bansko homes or Prime's Arequipa desk plan. Read the refund and early-departure terms before advancing several months of rent. An apartment's availability for 90 days does not establish your permission to remain or work there; check the destination government's rules for your passport and situation before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I live comfortably abroad on €1,000 per month?

It is possible within the lower Da Nang and Yogyakarta scenarios, but the margin is narrow once you add travel, insurance and arrival costs. First secure a suitable home and workspace in writing. If you cannot keep a reserve after paying those costs, choose a shorter stay or a higher budget.

Which shortlist fits €1,500–2,000 best?

Start with Kuala Lumpur, Cuenca, Chiang Mai and Bansko. Puebla also fits much of this band, but its full-workmonth scenario reaches €2,050; secure a home-and-desk quote before choosing it with a €1,500 ceiling. Check the season and exact contract, then choose through climate, daily routine and social fit. Compare the affordable social cities for recurring activities or the slow-travel destinations for a longer everyday routine.

Is a coworking membership essential?

No. A suitable home can remove the desk cost, while occasional passes provide variety and contact. Keep enough in the budget to test a workspace first. If meeting people is the main goal, use the loneliness guide to plan regular activities rather than assuming the cheapest desk will create a social life.

Will three months always be cheaper per month?

No. You spread one-off fees over more months, but rent and desk discounts depend on the contract. Some attractive advertised rates require six or twelve months, while a winter offer may require four. Compare the full bill for your intended stay.
